  • Did you know that there is a NYC Dog Mayoral race, spearheaded by an Astoria resident? The first matchup of the pawmaries kicks off on Wednesday, July 22nd. Follow the canine-dates journey on the official account at @dogmayornyc
  • Port of Peri Peri appears to be taking over the former Yaya's location.
  • A pair of Astoria Park's resident red-tailed hawks gave onlookers quite the scare after getting tangled in sweetgum seed pods. Thankfully, both managed to free themselves and fly to a nearby tree.
  • Burmese Bites looks to be opening in the former Point Brazil space on 31st Avenue.
  • Kinship Coffee has agreed to a settlement after the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection found more than 90 workers were denied protected paid time off, according to an announcement from Zohran Mamdani.
  • A local creative is looking for NYC-based co-founders to launch a storytelling and film podcast.
  • Cyclists are organizing a celebratory community ride along the newly completed 31st Street bike lane. The ride will start and end at 31st Ave Open Streets.
  • Lights, camera... Dexter? Film crews were spotted on both 28th Street and 31st Street this week, sparking speculation about what was filming.
  • "Queen of Cinema: A Movie Theater Blooms in Queens" highlights Stuart Cinema's move to town, with hopes of boosting the borough's growing independent film scene.

Meet Sen, an Astoria pup running for NYC Dog Mayor! Rescued from the streets of Azerbaijan in 2019, Sen transformed from a timid rescue into a trick dog and advocate for nervous pups. Her campaign motto? "New York is for the Underdogs."

Her platform stands on the belief that every dog deserves patience, love, training and a home that understands them. Follow her journey at @feelingkindaferal

Lap Swim

Take part in a long-distance lap swim competition. To participate in the competition, please speak to an Aquatics Specialist on the pool deck and indicate this on your application. An awards ceremony will be held at the end of August to celebrate the health and fitness achievements of swimmers who complete 15 miles or more. Indie Movie Monday - And Through The Portal We Go
