Happy last day of summer, Astoria!

Get ready to break out your flannel, grab a seasonal drink and enjoy autumn in Astoria. This week, we are all apparently getting very into public spaces.

Last week, neighbors gathered in Astoria Park for a cleanup organized by Pop the Astoria Bubble, Astoria Trash Club and Queens DSA’s Community Solidarity Committee. This Tuesday, September 22, the conversation continues at the Community Board 1 meeting, where the proposed privatization of the tennis courts at Astoria Park is on the agenda.

Meanwhile, a new public bathroom is coming to Astoria Boulevard and 31st Street, Q.E.D. turned sidewalk chalk into community building, and the Bier & Cheese Collective now has a permanent used-book section. Plus: outdoor movies are back at Socrates this weekend, a bald eagle has apparently discovered Astoria Park, and there is no shortage of art happening around the neighborhood.

Local Gossip:

We’re getting a public bathroom! A new free, accessible public restroom is coming to Astoria Boulevard South and 31st Street as part of the city’s new 17-bathroom pilot. The units will be open daily from 7am–10pm.
Q.E.D.’s first Chalkathon was a success. After someone vandalized the sidewalk chalk art, the community decided to fight chalk with… more chalk. The result: a whole lot of sidewalk art, with money raised going to the Queens Community Defense Fund.
Sunshine Cafe is at 72% of the way to its fundraising goal. If you’ve been meaning to help keep this local spot open, here’s your chance.
The Bier & Cheese Collective has made room for the bookworms. The shop now has a permanent section dedicated to used books, plus a BIG BOOK SALE coming October 3–4 from 12–7pm
Bald eagle spotted in Astoria Park. Yes, an actual bald eagle. Keep your eyes on the skies, Astoria.
Outdoor movies are back at Socrates Sculpture Park. The next screening is September 26. Check out @socratespark for the details.

Pop the Astoria Bubble Community Board Meeting

Community members are being asked to attend Community Board 1’s meeting and speak out about the city’s proposal for an indoor tennis and sports facility at the Astoria Park tennis courts. Pop the Astoria Bubble is organizing neighbors who oppose the proposed facility and are asking the community to show up and make their voices heard.
