Privacy policy
Astoria Live is a weekly newsletter and website for Astoria, Queens, where local businesses, groups and organizers can also submit listings and events. This policy explains what information we collect, why, and the choices you have. The short version: we collect as little as we can, we don’t sell your information, and you can unsubscribe or ask us to delete your information at any time.
What we collect
- Your email address, when you sign up for the newsletter.
- What you send through our submission form: the details of your business, group or event (name, description, address, website, social media, phone, dates and an optional photo), which we may publish once approved, and your name and email, which we use only to contact you about your submission and never publish.
- Basic technical information that any website receives, such as your IP address and browser type, which our hosting provider keeps briefly in server logs for security and troubleshooting.
Cookies and tracking
We don’t use advertising cookies or tracking pixels, and we don’t follow you around the web. We count visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which doesn’t use cookies or identify you personally: it tells us things like which pages are popular and roughly where visitors come from, as totals.
How we use your information
- To send you the newsletter you signed up for.
- To review submissions, publish the approved details in our guides, newsletter and social media, and contact you about your submission.
- To keep the site secure and prevent spam and abuse (for example, we briefly keep a record of form attempts to stop automated spam).
We don’t sell or rent your personal information, and we don’t share it for advertising.
Services we use
We rely on a few trusted companies to run Astoria Live. They process information only on our behalf:
- Kit: sends the newsletter and stores subscriber emails.
- Hostinger: hosts the website.
- Neon: hosts our database, which stores listings, events and submissions.
- Cloudflare: stores the photos shown on the site and our private database backups, and counts visits to the site (without cookies).
- GitHub: stores the website’s code and runs our nightly database backups.
How long we keep it
We keep your email for as long as you’re subscribed. When you unsubscribe, you stop receiving emails; you can also ask us to delete your email entirely.
We keep submissions, and the contact details that come with them, for as long as the listing or event is on Astoria Live, or until you ask us to remove them. Photos are re-saved when uploaded, which removes hidden location data. Our nightly backups are kept for 30 days, and a monthly backup is kept longer for our records; deleted information drops out of the daily backups within 30 days.
Your choices and rights
- Unsubscribe any time using the link at the bottom of every email.
- Access, correct or delete your information, including a listing or event you submitted, by emailing hello@astorialive.com. We’ll respond within 30 days.
Depending on where you live (for example, California or the European Union), you may have additional rights under local law. Email us and we’ll help.
Children
Astoria Live isn’t directed to children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect their information. If you believe a child has given us information, email us and we’ll delete it.
Security
We use reasonable measures to protect your information, including encrypted connections and limited access. No system is perfectly secure, so we can’t guarantee absolute security.
Changes to this policy
If we make meaningful changes, we’ll update the date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, let subscribers know.
